I know in the past 5 years malpractice insurance for obstetricians has gone up 400%. There are even cities in the US where you can no longer give a planned birth because doctors can no longer afford to practice. And it was due to their malpractice insurance that I was disqualified from giving birth there at 7 months pregnant, even though medical experts found noting wrong with me and ok'd a birthing center birth. Most homebirth midwives don't carry malpractice insurance because while only going up 200% for them opposed to 400% for doctors, it takes up more than thhalf of their income to pay. There is the Brooklyn Birthing Center and the Morritz Heights Birthing Center in the Bronx which are both freestanding birthing centers.
